Foreigners restore Slovakian architecture

"More and more foreigners are discovering the beauty of Slovakian architecture, buying historical buildings here and refurbishing them," writes Miroslav Kern observing a new trend that started after Slovakia joined the EU. "Cities like Banska Stiavnica and Levoca are attracting the most interest. Preservationists are very pleased about all this. Unlike Slovakian owners and companies, foreign investors are very careful about preserving the old architecture, and they respect the preservation authorities' regulations. Like Slovakians, they're also entitled to apply for state funding from the programme for restoring buildings."

Slovakia wants to open its labour market

"Slovakia will not block Bulgarians' and Romanians' access to its labour market if the two countries are allowed to join the EU in 2007," Miroslav Kern writes. When Slovakia and other countries joined the EU, most of old EU countries closed off their labour markets. The new member states were not happy about this. It would be paradoxical if Slovakia were to behave in the same way towards Bulgaria and Romania, having criticised other countries for such behaviour. The principle of solidarity must function among the new EU member states."
