EU funding for Latvia

In hardly any other country in Europe is the population so concentrated in the capital city and the gap between the city and rural areas as wide as in Latvia. In an effort to close this gap, Latvia is receiving EU funding from the EU Cohesion Fund. Andris Kazinovskis doubts the success of this measure: "The EU funding has not reduced the differences between Riga and the provinces. On the contrary, most of the money (39 percent) was allocated to the district of Riga, which is already the strongest region from an economic point of view. Only nine percent went to the districts of the country's poorest region, Latgale... This means that no new roads are being built there; instead the money is being invested in education. But people forget that those with a good education end up leaving Latgale to seek their fortune elsewhere."
