Germany in football fever

For many Germans football is not a game, but a way of life or even a kind of religion, writes journalist Andras Desi, who spoke to German journalist and documentary filmmaker Peter Kasza about the psychology behind football fever. "Football helps the Germans deal with their national identity problems arising from the country's troubled past.” Kasza points out that the miracle of Bern helped the Germans overcome the post-war depression, and that the team's success at the 1990 World Cup owed much to the great mood swing following the fall of the Wall: "In 1990, people took to the streets waving the national flag. They had never done this before, not even at the football stadium!”
