Dubstep enters the mainstream

A few days ago, BBC Radio 1 broadcast its first dubstep special. Olaf Karnik is glad that this genre of music is finally leaving the underground of London garages and entering the mainstream. He doesn't fear a softening of the "masculine sound" of musicians like Kode 9, Loefah and Burial. "In the last couple of years, the tempo of Hip Hop and Reggae has slowed and darker soundscapes and minimalist arrangements, metallic hard beats and deep resonating, almost murderously droning basses are taking over... In many cases, previously unknown forms of music are being created: hermetic and deep, powerful and captivating."
