Bulgarian medics freed, but at what price?

Fears over the fate of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor have come to an end following their safe return from Lybia to Sofia. According to Petar Karaboyev, Bulgaria's EU accession played a key role. "It is to be hoped that the drama in Libya has opened as many Bulgarians' eyes as possible to the fact that EU membership has not only brought freedom of movement within Europe but also that Europe doesn't desert citizens in need. Above all they must realise now that there is a connection between the release of the nurses, the US bases [in Eastern Europe] and the missions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo."
