Greece arms itself with new weapons against corruption

On Tuesday, February 27th, the Greek government adopted a new bill that for the first time will allow the penal repression of corruption in the private sector. "Corruption in the private sector exists. This is why the struggle against corruption is going to go beyond the public sector from now on", explains Fotini Kalliri. "As everyone knows, nearly all Greeks alternately find themselves victims or perpetrators of corruption. The mission is therefore going to be hard work for the Minister of Justice [Anastassios Papaligouras] who wants to be the Greek upholder of the law against the most wide-spread corruption. Bribes, kickbacks, abuse of influence, the fabrication and use of counterfeit documents to 'facilitate or cover-up' acts of corruption, will be liable for one to five years imprisonment, sanctions as heavy as in the public sector ... The new Greek law includes numerous drastic measures. It remains to be seen how they will be applied and if they will alter mentalities."
