The Polish Prime Minister visits Brussels

Since being nominated Prime Minister at the beginning of July, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, twin brother of the Polish President, has had a rather turbulent relationship with the EU. He was interviewed by Jurek Kuczkiewicz on the eve of his departure for Brussels where he is carrying out his first visit abroad this Wednesday August 11th. Jaroslaw Kaczynski brings up Poland's current bad image. "I think that if there are misunderstandings, they should be cleared up. (...) There is indeed a problem, but I don't know if this is a subject to be discussed with representatives of the European Union. The subject of Poland's image is a subject taken up by the press and the press in our country is free. I hope that those in charge of the EU are well informed of Polish issues, in which case there is no need to discuss this with them."

Jaroslaw Kaczynski attacks foreign media

On July 14, Polish President Lech Kaczynski is to swear in his twin brother Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), as Prime Minister. In an interview with Anita Gargas, Jaroslaw Kaczynski sharply criticises the way he is being treated by the foreign media. "In the West, as in Poland, there are two different worlds: the real world and the media world. The latter is, for the most part, not well disposed towards us... On the one hand it's about general political style. No doubt many dislike the idea of Poland wanting to become a subject. On the other hand, a large part of the media are conducting what Professor Zdzislaw Krasnodebski accurately described as a cultural battle against Poland as a Catholic country that resists most progressive trends. We represent the majority of Polish society who do not hold progressive views."

Lech Kaczynski on Russia

In a double interview led by Peter G. Feher, Jaroslaw Kaczynski talks about domestic affairs in Poland while his brother, Polish President Lech Kaczynski, discusses relations between Russia and Central and Eastern Europe. "At present there is no immediate military threat to Central and Eastern Europe, but the problems with energy supplies are also a threat in the broadest sense of the word... The Visegrad countries (the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary) need to adopt a joint Ostpolitik. Russia's political strategies in its relations with Hungary are entirely different to its strategies regarding Poland. I wonder whether Russia is not just trying to play us off against each other. We need a functioning strategic partnership, or at least an information partnership, for our Ostpolitik... We should also make a joint demand for the security of our energy supplies, and this requires a large measure of solidarity within the union."
