Danish isolationism

Following the government's rejection of a visionary EU policy, its doubts about the current WTO talks and its refusal to comply with the UN's request that former Liberian dictator Charles Taylor be sent to a Danish prison once he has been sentenced by a UN special tribunal, Lotte Folke Kaarsholm voices her growing concern about Denmark's course in foreign policy. "The recently observed tendency of Rasmussen's government to sidestep international organisations is making a bad example out of Denmark, as we already have been over the past few years with our strict immigration policy. We are setting a bad example that sidesteps and disrespects global institutions, and this in a world that is growing closer and closer together. It's difficult to see any logic behind the isolationist signals being sent by the government, not only because everybody knows that global cooperation strengthens the position of smaller countries with respect to larger ones, but also because Denmark actually has the resources to help others."
