Reader acceptance as an ersatz for blogging ethics

"No one is aware of the key role bloggers play in society," writes blogger David Antos. He bemoans the lack of ethical rules for blogging. "Unlike in classic journalism there is no catalogue of rules which bloggers must observe... ." He explains that the reason for this lies in the blogging culture itself: "Anything can call itself a blog: whether it's the diary of a 'Tokio Hotel' fan, an internal company news letter or work for a serious magazine about trading on the stock markets. Under these circumstances it's impossible to formulate ethical rules. The only criteria that counts in this new type of medium is reader acceptance. Winning the trust of readers is the most important battle in this hotly contended Internet sector."
