Polishing up your social media profile pays off

The Estonian consumer loan company Bigbank announced this week that from now on it will include potential customers' social media profiles when assessing their creditworthiness. The liberal daily Eesti Päevaleht advises users to polish up their profiles: "Do customers stand to benefit when the bank includes their social media profile in a credit check? ... They could certainly benefit from a lower interest rate if the bank has little other 'ordinary' information about them. At the same time, information dug up on the social media can often be quite strange. For example, according to one US credit rating firm people who only use upper case or lower case letters in their messages are less likely to repay their loans. In any case one thing is clear: optimising (or manipulating) your social media profile makes more sense from year to year."
