Victory against tobacco industry

The members of the European Parliament have successfully stood up to the powerful tobacco lobby, the liberal daily Der Tagesspiegel writes in delight: "The principle is correct: If you want to smoke and are willing to accept the health risks, you may do so. But at the same time with the new law that cleared an important hurdle on Tuesday the EU is going that extra mile to make smoking unattractive. ... The industry has no choice but to accept such limitations as its product is dangerous. But it's not likely that cigarette manufacturers will take it lying down: no doubt there will be a case before the European Court of Justice. Because until now the sector's lobbyists haven't left a stone unturned to avoid stricter regulations. But the basic outcome is that the rules will be tougher - and that is no mean feat in view of the pressure from the lobbies."
