Lorry lobby controls EU plans for Brenner

In negotiations with the Austrian minister of finance the government of the Austrian state of Tyrol has reduced its part in the 9.7-billion-euro construction costs for the rail tunnel under the Brenner Pass by one third. The daily Tiroler Tageszeitung calls for a concrete commitment to rail traffic on the part of the EU: "For decades Tyroleans have had to bear the brunt of the heavy traffic crossing the Alps. They've done their bit, and now the ball is finally in the EU's court. But the European Union is slave to the international transport lobby, and puts the right to free trade of goods even above that of Tyroleans to a clean environment. There's no other way of interpreting the fact that although Brussels is carrying a good part of the tunnel costs it has still failed to commit to the essential complementary measures. But without the guarantee that heavy-goods traffic will be obliged to switch from the roads to the railway network and without adequate corresponding lines in Bavaria and South Tyrol, they needn't bother digging the billion-euro hole in the first place."
