Only a strong leader can move Turkey forwards

The Turkish opposition has concluded that Turkey's first cabinet meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday is a test run for Erdoğan's ambitions to establish a presidential system in the country. Turkey only stands to gain from having a strong president, the pro-government daily Sabah comments: "At first glance the parliamentary system may come across as the more pluralistic and participative type of democratic regime, but in reality this country has only suffered under this system. Each coalition government has set us back by ten to fifteen years. ... No one can dispute this because we all know that Turkey has only ever made progress in all areas under the power, the name and the charisma of a single leader and in times of one-party government. ... Whether we like it or not, in the economy, foreign policy, security and many other areas it was only in these periods that radical steps and reforms were implemented."
