Good politics better than compulsory voting

In connection with the preparation of a new election law, representatives of the opposition in the Bulgarian parliament are demanding the introduction of compulsory voting. But forcing people to go to the ballot never achieved anything, the pro-government daily Monitor counters: "In Greece and Belgium compulsory voting was introduced years ago, but with what success? ... Certain parties hope this will boost their election results and secure them more members of parliament. A conservative voter, for example, would vote for the Conservatives if he had to go to the ballot, even if they had disappointed him. But he will only do it so as not to have to vote for the Socialists. Therefore it would be best if the parties reflected on how to motivate voters with good programmes and good ideas instead."
