Poroshenko caught in a dilemma

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko did not extend the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine on Monday evening. The country's army has now resumed its operations against pro-Russian separatists. This was a difficult decision for Poroshenko, the left-leaning daily Právo suspects: "On the one hand he is under pressure from the Ukrainian public and politicians who argue that the ceasefire only gave the separatists time to regroup, secure further weapons and gather strength. On the other hand the president is responsible for protecting human lives that are endangered by the fighting. He is losing the sympathy of voters in the southeast. And finally there's his concern about how his foreign partners will react. ... The ceasefire was fragile. The Ukrainian army has lost dozens of soldiers. Now the president can only hope that his troops regain control of the occupied areas quickly and without major losses."
