France endangers worker mobility

The French Interior Minister Claude Guéant said on Sunday in an interview that too many legal immigrants come to France. With an eye to the more than 500,000 Portuguese living in France, the tabloid Correio da Manhã sees Guéant's statement as an attack on the free movement of workers within the EU: "Interior Minister Claude Guéant has sounded the alarm against legal immigrants. So now it's no longer about driving away the illegal ones but about stemming the flow of workers from other EU countries. It seems they're shifting into reverse gear when it comes to the free movement of persons. Yet at the same time they talk about how the states are losing their sovereignty regarding economic and financial policy. This kind of EU bears greater resemblance with the former USSR than with the United States."
