Unusually high suicide rate in Slovenia

According to Slovenia's Statistics Office Slovenia takes fourth place in Europe for the number of suicides. On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day Anja Ščuka complains in the online edition of the free newspaper Žurnal24 of the country's lack of psychiatrists: "In Slovenia 28 percent of the population suffers from mental problems but only six percent of them take advantage of professional help. The few courageous ones who do must often ... call numerous therapists and wait several months for an appointment. What a stroke of luck for the healthcare system that so few of those affected actually seek help. On today's World Suicide Prevention Day I ask general practitioners to at least explain to their patients what options are open to them."
