Grand coalition government good for Turkey

In its search for a coalition partner German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative CDU/CSU alliance plans to enter a second round of negotiations with the SPD and the Greens next week. Political analyst Ebru Turhan explains in the liberal English-language daily Hürriyet Daily News that a grand coalition would be advantageous for German-Turkish relations: "While the SPD election programme calls for progress in Turkey's EU accession process the CDU/CSU election programme rejects full membership for Turkey. The SPD would be a strong coalition partner compared to the FDP and could exert more influence on the government's Turkey policy. ... A swift opening of the [next] chapter [in Turkey's accession talks] after the elections would send a positive signal regarding Germany's 'pacta sunt servanda' [agreements must be kept] policy vis-à-vis Turkey."
