Strange debate on the Swedish royal wedding

Sweden continues to debate whether it runs counter to gender equality for King Carl XVI Gustav to lead his daughter Victoria to the alter when she weds Daniel Westling in mid June. Sociologist and professor of Family Research Jan Trost shows surprised at all the fuss in the daily Upsala Nya Tidning: "All this talk of gender equality seems strange. Why should the king subject himself to the dictates of gender equality here of all places? What if the king followed his daughter to the altar, and Daniel's mother her son? Would that be gender equality? And what should we think of the Church - with the archbishop at its head - complaining that gender equality is not being respected in this context? In other contexts the Swedish Church has been far from taking such a strong stance regarding questions of equality. If the king thinks it's cool to hand his daughter over in the church, let him do so for goodness sake."
