Cigdem Toprak on the political influence of stars in Turkey

The protests against the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan continue in Turkey. Artists are playing a central role in this rebellion, the 26-year-old blogger and journalist Cigdem Toprak writes in the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung: "These are well-known TV actors, directors and other stars, who mobilise the masses through Facebook and Twitter. And they've been doing this right from the start. Superstars in Turkey play a very different political role than they do in Germany. They shoulder social responsibility and commit themselves to social causes. They're present where the Turkish state cannot or does not want to fulfil its educational duties. Their faces appear on posters and advertisements dealing with protection of animals, stopping violence against women and other forms of discrimination. Mehmet Ali Alabora, Okan Bayülgen and Gonca Vuslateri are moral role models, and they overshadow almost all politicians and journalists. ... A youth whose ideal is openness can only win the fight for democracy and freedom."
