Hamburg and Gezi not comparable

The protests against the closure of a cultural centre in Hamburg that started in mid-December have frequently been compared in pro-government Turkish media with the Gezi Park protests of the summer of 2013. But the two movements have little in common, Agos, the weekly of the Armenian minority in Turkey, argues: "The demonstrators in Hamburg have presented concrete demands, for example that the Rote Flora cultural centre should continue to belong to them, or that migrants should be granted official refugee status. The movement is not directed against government policy. So in this respect it clearly differs from the Gezi Park protests. Moreover the demonstrations don't have much backing from the general public. ... And finally, unlike the Turkish press the German press doesn't practice self-censorship and reports on the developments in Hamburg."
