South Stream benefits Bulgaria

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov signed an agreement on the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline in Sofia on Saturday. The pipline is planned to cross the Black Sea to Bulgaria, by-passing Ukraine. The energy expert and government advisor Atanas Tassev comments in the daily 24 Chasa: "Bulgaria's national interests in the South Stream project can be summed up by the motto 'the more, the better'. This is all about making sound use of our geostrategic position. Even if South Stream sticks to the ominous formula of 'one supplier - one pipeline', it does solve an important structural problem by removing Ukraine as a potential risk factor in the transit of Russian gas to Europe. This shows that South Stream is above all a political project for Russia, with which it is attempting to set itself up as a reliable supplier for European consumers."
