Estonia neglects its euro orphans

Many Estonians have left the country to work abroad in recent years. The daily Eesti Päevaleht expresses concern for the children left behind: "Teachers and custodians who work with such children on a daily basis don't know how to handle the phenomenon. There are no guidelines or clear instructions on the matter. In Sweden, the phenomenon of 'euro orphans' has received much attention, especially because many Eastern Europeans work there. In the Nordic States there are strict rules in this area, and it is in general taboo to leave one's children unattended. Experts who have looked into the development of such children warn of the negative consequences, both for the euro orphans themselves as well as for society as a whole. ... Of course the adults don't just waltz off irresponsibly and leave their children behind, they do it to be able to feed their families. But we in Estonia must not close our eyes to the problem and pretend it doesn't exist. Children have a right to be cared for and to grow up with their parents."
