A boost for mayoral candidate Navalny

Hundreds of supporters gathered to greet the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny when he returned to Moscow after being released on bail on Saturday. Upon his arrival at the train station he vowed he would press ahead with his campaign to become mayor of the Russian capital in the September elections. Last Thursday Navalny was sentenced to five years in jail but was surprisingly released shortly afterwards. The liberal daily Postimees finds the situation confusing: "The events have unfolded at lightning speed and you get the feeling that you can never know what the Russian justice system will do next - another verdict of guilty, freedom or a house on chicken legs [like that of the Russian folklore figure Baba Yaga]. … It's entirely possible that the whole affair has made Navalny even more attractive as a mayoral candidate and that many Muscovites will now vote for him who wouldn't have done before."
