Dziennik Gazeta Prawna - Poland | 12/09/2013

The Polish macho is a dying breed

The role of women in Poland has changed since the end of communism. For instance the number of female MPs in the Polish parliament, the Sejm, has doubled to 23.9 percent, as the conservative daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reports today, Thursday. This is a clear indication that the Polish macho is in decline - even without women's quotas, the newspaper contends: "The current figures clearly show that equal rights are making inexorable progress. And this process is accompanied by a vocal debate on women's rights. The 'weaker' sex is getting itself an excellent education and good qualifications and knows what it wants. But it must be said that men are also doing their bit. They're getting used to the fact that they don't rule the world or the companies, and that they must do their share of the housework. ... Polish women are in a position to chair a board of directors or supervisory board - even without quotas. And in the same way they can be the head of the family too."
