Népszabadság - Hungary | 26/08/2013

Hungary's opposition way too late

In Hungary the two strongest left-wing opposition parties, the socialist MSZP and the Együtt 2014 party led by former prime minister Gordon Bajnai (2009-2010), have announced plans to select the leading candidate for their left-wing electoral alliance in the parliamentary elections through a preliminary election. Commenting in the left-liberal daily Népszabadság, journalist Brigitta Szabó says the idea comes far too late: "I have long since ceased to care who will be the leading candidate for the 'democratic left' in the election. It doesn't matter whether his name is Attila Mesterházy [leader of the MSZP] or Gordon Bajnai. All that matters is that there's finally a joint candidate who can appeal to the left's voters and challenge Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. ... If they really believed in a change of government next year, they would have reached an agreement long ago and prepared answers and solutions for resolving the abnormalities of today's Hungary under the Orbán government."
