Belgium's royals can learn from the Windsors

Crown Prince Philippe and his wife Mathilde will be the only members of the Belgian royal family to attend the royal wedding in London. A missed opportunity, complains Frederik de Swaef in the daily De Standaard, because the Belgian royals could learn a thing or two from the Windsors: "Although no royal family bears a heavier burden of tradition than the British, it has a far better grip on the 21st century than the Belgian royal family. ... The British royal family is not perfect, but at least it seems able to learn from its mistakes. The Belgian royal family, by contrast, makes the same mistakes time after time. After the Diana debacle the Queen decided that her family must become united. Prince Charles was finally allowed to bring his Camilla on board. Our king, by contrast, has not yet recognised his extramarital child even though everyone knows about it. ... The British have been able to turn 'bad publicity' into 'any publicity at all'. In Belgium however all the royal family is managing to do is cling on to power."
