Investigative journalism strengthens the press

A recent Swiss study concludes that the quality of reporting in the Swiss media has suffered greatly from the broad range of information now available on the Internet and in the free newspapers. Pietro Supino counters in the daily Le Temps that the quality of information available has never been as diverse and comprehensive as it is today: "The Internet is unparalleled for the possibilities it offers in terms of deepening and classifying information. The key menace to the pluralism and credibility of journalism doesn't come from the new medias but from an altogether different source: public debate is increasingly falling under the influence of the public relations industry. ... Investigative journalism must be reinforced. I'm convinced that the pursuit of independent enquiries can do much to make the quality press a cut above the other medias, and that even in the future readers will be ready to pay for that difference."
