Romanian red tape encourages tax evasion

Romania is losing 54 million euros daily as a result of tax evasion, figures published by its national statistics agency reveal. The tax office's initiative of sending a circular to 600,000 entrepreneurs at the end of October warning them to declare their taxes correctly will do little to change this, the liberal-conservative daily Adevărul fears: "The tax dodger is not so worried about losing money. It's the aggressive bureaucracy, the loss of time and all the forms that need filling in to pay taxes that put him off. This is why the tax dodger has developed his methods: he bribes corrupt officials, sets up letter-box companies, organises fictitious money transfers. This way he gains more than those who invest time, effort and energy (or rather waste it) into fulfilling all the tax requirements. ... Romania puts people off with its absurd bureaucracy. We see how the foreign investors take their money to Hungary or even Bulgaria instead - repelled by Romania, which acts like an anti-magnet."
