Refugees must (be allowed to) work

Refugees can only be integrated if they are allowed and made to work, writes the centre-left daily Tages-Anzeiger in reaction to the polarised election campaign on the issue in Switzerland: "In a country where social value is strongly defined through work, integration means integration through work. We certainly don't need forced labour, but we do need to impose sanctions on the refusal to work or introduce conscripted labour in the secondary labour market, that is through employment schemes in communities, cantons and relief organisations. The right is making unfounded claims that this would encourage more refugees to come to Switzerland. And the left thinks conscripted labour is demeaning. But to demand something in return for offering support is to insist on human dignity and respect for migrants! Work experience will also help them once they've returned to or been resettled in their homelands."
