"Valkyrie" can spawn interest in the German resistance

Peter Steinbach, director of Berlin's German Resistance Memorial Center, writes in the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung that "Valkyrie", the film starring Tom Cruise about the plot to assassinate Hitler, may not tell the real story of the ringleader Claus von Stauffenberg but it could arouse interest in the German resistance: "We strongly recommend separating this Stauffenberg film from its pseudo-historical context. It then tells the story of an officier who defies objections and mounts a plot to assassinate a criminal dictator. His name is Stauffenberg, but like his fellow conspirators it could have been anything else. The Nazi era would then be no more than a backdrop against which a dramatic and thrilling story is set. This film can be seen as a gripping thriller. It's better not to treat it as an ersatz history lesson and give it more significance than it deserves. However it can serve to make history more accessible, and in that sense like other historic films it fulfils a worthy function."
