Death penalty no solution

If found guilty the alleged rapists face the death penalty, which in India can be imposed in cases of brutal murder. But applying capital punishment would not further the interests of women, the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung warns: "Besides the moral reservations regarding this archaic form of retribution, and the fact that fewer and fewer countries use it, the death penalty would hardly have the effect desired by its proponents in India. Because as long as the chances of being punished for a criminal act remain so minimal even the most severe punishment is unlikely to deter potential perpetrators. Only if the police and judges stop treating the victims of rape like culprits, and violence against women is punished consistently - rather than in just a few sensational cases - will India manage to reduce a rape rate which is shamefully high for an emerging economic power."
