US legal imperialism against VW

The fact that it was US authorities that brought the fraud at Volkswagen to light is another example of US legal imperialism, the centre-left daily Tages-Anzeiger concludes: "In the early 1980s, when the American economy was stalling yet again and the US authorities were playing the role of global policeman, the following sentence was very popular here: 'America has two best-selling exports: jeans and laws.' … Since then the Iphone may have established itself as the new American export hit, but the US lawmakers nonetheless continue to successfully extend the application of their laws beyond their own national borders. … The latest example is the VW scandal. Naturally the Americans are also acting in their own interests here."
