No one should rewrite their own past

The Czech Republic's new finance minister, billionaire Andrej Babiš, is due to give testimony before a court in Bratislava this Thursday regarding his allegations that the institution that manages the communist state security files has wrongly listed him as a former agent. This is not the first time someone has tried to rewrite their past, the liberal daily Sme criticises: "The court will not just pass judgement on a new Czech minister. The trial is a trial by proxy of the current trend in the Czech Republic and Slovakia of people trying to relativise or rewrite their past. It's more difficult to face up to the past, admit mistakes, try to correct them and not repeat them. Denying them is all the more tempting when you hold public office. ... Our presidential candidate (current Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico), who was a communist but allegedly had a strict Catholic upbringing, also fits in with this picture."
