Anti-Roma rallies deepen rifts in Czech society

Around 300 right-wing extremists and many locals took part in another anti-Roma march in the Czech Republic on Saturday, this time in the north Moravian city of Vítkov. The left-leaning daily Právo voices concern at the growing hostility towards Roma and rejects the argument that the Roma are those who profit most from the government's social benefits: "Tell me exactly what problems the quintuplets [born to a Romani mother] cause? Why is their mother receiving threats from the Facebook group 'Death to Gypsy children'? … We must bear in mind that social benefits are not a way for Roma to line their pockets but a poor substitute for the opportunities that society fails to offer to most Roma. … It's easy to send the Roma into a panic with hate marches. But such actions will only deepen the rifts in our society."
