Poland needs no budget amendment for flood victims

The national conservative Polish presidential candidate Jarosław Kaczyński has said that Poland should free up additional funds for victims of the recent floods. One step at a time, writes the liberal daily Gazeta Wyborcza: "Thanks to higher economic growth tax revenues could rise. In addition, the budget will be bolstered by a further four billion złoty [one billion euros] from the profits of the National Bank. All of this could mean that the budget deficit [for 2010] could be ten billion złoty lower than previous estimates of 52.2 billion złoty. But these are merely prognoses. ... There is still time to amend the budget. If it turns out there's not enough money to deal with the flood damages, the government will certainly not balk at raising it from other sources. Currently reserves of around two billion złoty have been set aside to this effect. So why make such a hue and cry about an amendment?"
