Tusk steals opposition's populist schemes

Poland's liberal-conservative Prime Minister Donald Tusk presented an exposé on Friday in which he explains that he is planning a government programme to boost the slowing economy. In doing so he has launched an attack on the opposition and its populist politics, Piotr Skwieciński points out in the conservative daily Rzeczpospolita: "Tusk's new strategy puts the Law and Justice Party (PiS) in an awkward position. Because with this strategy the [ruling] PO is taking up a theme that Jarosław Kaczyński's faction had monopolised up to now. One could easily believe that Tusk's initiative is just a PR stunt. Or that it's a feeble attempt to reverse the current trend in the polls, which is fatal for the ruling party. … Nonetheless the PiS is not in an enviable position right now. It needs to demarcate itself clearly from the government. But how is it supposed to achieve this if the government suddenly proposes something that - apart from a few details - basically tallies with the PiS's own ideas?"
