President must move into official residence

Latvia's parliament elected Defence Minister Raimonds Vējonis as the country's new president at the start of June. Vējonis doesn't want to leave his home in an apartment building and move into the presidential residence in Jūrmala. A president has obligations to fulfil, the national conservative daily Latvijas avīze points out indignantly: "If a person decides to run for the post of president then he or she assumes certain responsibilities. These include not living where you find it most comfortable but in the residence designated to the head of state. Can anyone imagine the US president not living in the White House? Inconceivable! … Perhaps someone could give the newly elected president the following wise advice: to not just play at democracy and to put up with a little discomfort and move into the presidential residence."
