Portuguese should stay calm

August is usually a quiet holiday month in Portugal when the biggest news is at most forest fires. And even if Europe is going up in flames the Portuguese shouldn't let this spoil their holidays, writes Manuel Serrão in the daily Jornal de Notícias: "While half of the world is going up in flames the other half is watching dumbly. ... But to soothe the fears of my fellow countrymen, who are deservedly enjoying their holidays: despite all the threats Portugal does not belong to the burning half of the world. ... Don't worry, my Portuguese compatriots! It was the British prime minister who had to break off his holiday to participate in a crisis cabinet meeting. Our prime minister is still enjoying the sun and the sea on the Algarve. ... The English are on the Algarve in their thousands and are behaving themselves. And just a couple of days ago an English football team played at [Benfica Lisbon's] Luz stadium and behaved charmingly too: they allowed the Benfica club to win a house trophy it had never won so far."
