Esther-Mirjam Sent calls for women's qouta at Dutch firms

A report by a Dutch commission of enquiry reveals that the Dutch government's campaign for more women in top management positions has had little impact. The Netherlands should introduce fixed quotas as Norway has, where 40 percent of the top management posts must be allocated to women, economics professor Esther-Mirjam Sent urges in the daily De Volkskrant: "The Dutch always react badly to emancipation, saying it's discrimination. But you don't have to be emancipated to approve a quota like that in Norway. Take a look at what's happened there: The Norwegian companies are performing better, and this at a time of economic crisis. In other words: we're talking about tough economic facts here and not 'soft' women's liberation. ... Given the positive impact of the Norwegian model our parliament should get to work on the corresponding social democratic draft law, if only to give the Netherlands' fragile economy an additional boost. Remember that wise saying: Children are the future, as long as their mothers are also given one."
