Nazi sympathiser Herr Karl is international satire

Fifty years ago the Austrian actor Helmut Qualtinger recorded the one-man show Herr Karl for Austrian television. His portrayal of a Nazi sympathiser became legendary. The writer Franz Schuh praises in the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung Qualtinger's ability to turn typically Austrian traits into international satire: "Qualtinger's character - and it's true his very bulk - perfectly embodied the inimitable Viennese interplay of sentimentality and brutality. Characters like Herr Karl exist everywhere, but Qualtinger's portrayal of how Herr Karl cultivated his own image depicts the Austrian character in its purest form. I don't buy the accusation that Qualtinger was no more than a local talent. On the contrary, I believe a certain sort of satire really only becomes 'international' when it dissects regional biases with extreme thoroughness, not to say pedantry."
