Net neutrality: Worst fears confirmed

Following the European Parliament's decision on net neutrality Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Höttges has announced that in future the company will charge startups "a few percent" of their revenues for extra fast Internet service. The centre-left daily Tages-Anzeiger voices dismay: "[Höttges] has confirmed the worst fears of net neutrality campaigners who see equal treatment for all data as a basic prerequisite for innovation. Simon Schlauri, the Swiss net neutrality expert, comments on Telekom's position as follows: 'We can now see what the telecommunications companies' intentions are in the event that a regulation is not forthcoming.' One thing is clear: startups can't afford to pay 'a few percent' of their revenues if they want to compete on the global market. If you want an innovative startup landscape you have to support net neutrality unconditionally."
