Swiss must regulate campaign funding

In Switzerland, the financing of political campaigns and election campaigns has been subject to barely any regulation up to now, prompting OSCE election observers to criticise the country. In the run-up to the parliamentary elections in October, the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung calls for legal supervision of the election campaign and the voting budget, fearing that otherwise Switzerland's image will suffer: "The 'one man one vote' principle, the inadmissibility of a census are core elements of a democratic system. If equal opportunity is to be taken seriously in politics, the financial means of the opponents must be more or less equal. ... Switzerland was very tardy in introducing votes for women in comparison with other European countries. The ongoing lack of regulation for the financing of political campaigns is another glaring stain on the record of a country that sees itself as a model of democracy. The longer politics waits, the bigger that stain will be."
