No to intervention in Syria

Europe and the US have supported the Assad regime for decades, writes the Syrian-German author Rafik Schami accusingly in the liberal-conservative daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung, arguing that intervening now is the wrong way to go: "Since Obama declared publicly that he wanted to attack Assad, I've been showered with requests for interviews and speeches. I've turned them all down, and will now voice my opinion through this channel. I was, am and will always be against a military attack from outside Syria. But I don't hold it against any Syrians and fully understand when many of my suffering countrymen favour such an intervention. I'm against it because it would kill the revolution. According to the American plan, Syria would become a second Afghanistan: this time the Iranians and their Hezbollah henchmen active in Syria are to be weakened. Assad will fall, but he'll be replaced by a military council installed by the CIA and other Western secret services who will make sure that Syria becomes a second Iraq."
