Treason investigation outdated

The investigation by the German Federal Public Prosecutor of two journalists accused of treason has attracted heavy criticism in the last few days. The blog allegedly published confidential documents from the intelligence services regarding increased Internet surveillance. The secret services cannot work in secret in today's world, observes the liberal-conservative Tagesspiegel: "Precisely because the relationship between security and freedom is being renegotiated every day we must talk openly about it. … The principle of transparency has already established itself to such an extent that the intelligence services and their demands for absolute confidentiality feel like relics from another epoch. The considerable indignation from all political camps shows that when it comes to national security there is very little sympathy left - or political backing (at least publicly) - for legitimate whippings in support of the state."
