A blow to Lithuanian press freedom

Journalists of the Lithuanian news agency BNS came under investigation last week after representatives of the media published information about a smear campaign allegedly planned by Russian secret services against the Lithuanian president. On the portal Delfi the journalist Romas Sakadolskis disapproves of the questioning, searches and confiscations the journalists were subjected to: "The authorities have trampled on the journalists' right to gather information. The protection of sources is the mark of a democratic state. This unprecedented action has violated the guarantee of the freedom of information, and 7 November 2013 [the day most of the interrogations were carried out] will go down in history as Lithuania's Day of Shame. ... We will soon celebrate the tenth anniversary of Lithuania's joining the EU. It cannot be ignored that the authorities who were part of this scandal have still not assimilated the principles of democracy."
