Volkswagen is too big to fail

Despite the emissions scandal German carmaker Volkswagen needn't fear for its survival, the liberal daily Sme believes: "Will the international institutions abandon VW? Will the company be made into a sacrificial lamb? Unlikely. Not even an exemplary punishment is in the cards. The company is simply too big - and too important - for that to happen. It is one of the breadwinners of the German economy. And its plants in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and overseas employ tens of thousands of people. ... What about the comparison with the Greek crisis? Let's bear in mind everything Germany has done to prevent Greece from collapsing and exiting the Eurozone. ... Like a prodigal son, VW will once again be welcomed with open arms. In the hope that it has learned its lesson. And that something like this doesn't happen again."

Slovakian automotive boom contains risks

The British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover wants to build a new plant in Slovakia with an annual capacity of 300,000 cars. Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Tuesday in Bratislava that the government had signed a preliminary agreement with the carmaker on the project. Volkswagen, PSA Peugeot Citroën and Kia already have large plants in the country. The liberal daily Sme sees this focus as a potential risk: "Analysts may claim that our economy is sufficiently diverse. But come 2018 when the first Jaguar rolls off the line, this may not be the case any more. A new financial crisis would be problematic. People have to save to buy a new car. In the recent crisis China helped us out, as the third largest importer of cars from Slovakia. Russia is also an important market. But both countries have serious problems. What happens if they stop buying?"
