EU arrest warrants: Zagreb hurts own interests

The European Commission began preparing sanctions against Croatia on Monday because the new member is refusing to implement the European arrest warrant legislation with immediate effect. The Croatian government is trying to protect former communist secret service agent Josip Perković from extradition to Germany, but it is doing itself no favours in the process, the conservative daily Vecernji List admonishes: "Prime Minister Milanović's 'Lex Perković' is not just saddling Croatia with sanctions, it is also hurting his own Social Democratic Party. Perković was a communist secret service agent - so thanks to Milanović his party now bears the stigma of being the communist SDP that protects red spies once more. Although former communists are also to be found in other parties, even in the conservative HDZ, Milanović has now managed to drag his party back into the red swamp."
