Croatian government survives local elections

In the second round of the local elections on Sunday, the Croatians decided who will be their new mayors. Having secured victories in several major cities, the elections went better for the social-liberal governing coalition than many had predicted, the conservative daily Večernji List notes: "Zoran Milanović has been able to prove his worth as leader of the SDP [Social Democrats]. His comrades may criticise him for having lost the capital, but the dissatisfaction within the party can't be that great because the SDP has won some attractive cities. As prime minister Milanović can be content because the SDP and its partners didn't suffer a major defeat in the local elections after all. This was particularly important for Milanović because the government is isolated right now: the trade unions, the Church, the employers and of course the opposition HDZ [Croatian Democratic Union] are all against it."
