France will abuse fight against terrorism

The French state will abuse the war on terror declared by President François Hollande for other ends, Alexis Poulin, director of the news website EurActiv France, and Dan Van Raemdonck, vice president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) warn in the centre-left weekly magazine L'Obs: "The state is powerless in face of economic developments and unable to satisfy social demands, so it is concentrating its efforts on putting society increasingly under surveillance on the pretext that it is ensuring the safety of the citizens. The means used, from the state of emergency to laws favouring blanket surveillance and controls, will have repercussions on social organisation. As in the past they will be used to serve other ends than the fight against terror, and ultimately risk stifling all forms of protest."
